What Causes Varicose Veins and Spider Veins to Itch and Burn?

As if the unsightliness of varicose veins and spider veins weren’t pain enough, these veins can often be a downright pain. And by that we don’t mean pain in the seriously causing you pain variety, but pain as in irritating and uncomfortable. You just want them to go away.
Most people with varicose veins and spider veins don’t actually ever experience any serious, noticeable pain. But as the vein disease that’s probably causing them takes hold,  the vein can become inflamed and irritated. And because the spider veins and most varicose veins are “superficial” veins — the inflammation and irritation cause the surrounding nerves to start firing up, which causes a burning sensation or makes them itch. Sun exposure can amplify the problem, so cover up the legs if you plan on being out in the sun for an extended period.
Sometimes the skin where the burning sensation is coming from is warm to the touch. If you ever experience this, please call us at 281-565-0033 as soon as possible to come in for a leg ultrasound. It’s important to find out if it’s vein disease that’s causing the burning and heat and not anything more serious like a blood clot in the leg.
Itchiness is a real problem too because excessive scratching causes the skin to break down, leading to advanced vein disease conditions like venous dermatitis and leg ulcers. Again, a quick, painless ultrasound will provide all the intel our vein specialists need to determine if it’s vein disease that’s the root cause of your leg itchiness. Most often, burning and itching sensations are accompanied by other feelings like heavy, tired, achy legs or occasional ankle or leg swelling — the classic signs of vein disease. So be on the lookout for these symptoms too.
If, during your consultation and ultrasound, it is discovered that your leg issues are due to vein disease, your Hamilton Vein Center vein specialist will devise a personalized vein treatment plan for you that will nip your vein disease problem in the bud — right at the source of the problem.
Call 281-565-0033 today to put your leg fire out and end that irritating itch with the most advanced vein treatments available.  With multiple locations serving the greater Houston area, there’s a Hamilton Vein Center clinic near you.
